NATIONAL CRIME VICTIMS’ RIGHTS WEEK
April 22-28, 2007
ACROSS GEORGIA

To honor individuals who have been impacted by crime, many organizations and agencies organize ceremonies, workshops and prevention activities. The Georgia judicial circuits also plan formal and informal tributes. Although most events revolve around the actual week, the whole month is used to promote this important cause. Here are some of the scheduled events and contact information.

Alapaha Judicial Circuit
For the entire month, in all five counties, advocates will be distributing lapel awareness ribbons and bookmarks. Bookmarks are distributed through faith-based groups with information and prayer requests. City and county schools will be having poster and essay contests. Atkinson County will be holding a vigil in Pearson on April 26. Advocates are submitting articles for local newspapers each week regarding National Crime Victims’ Rights Week. There will be proclamations by the mayor with appropriate publicity and a balloon release.

Cherokee Judicial Circuit
This month, for National Crime Victims' Rights Week, the Cherokee Judicial Circuit will conduct a series of Public Service Announcements and will participate in an interview regarding victim rights, victim services and victim impact, all of which will be broadcast on local radio. Advocates will hold an interview with the local newspaper which will receive front page coverage. Additionally, the Cherokee Judicial Circuit will hold a poster contest and print the names and posters of the winners in the local newspaper. Advocates will print a banner to be placed on the courthouse lawn highlighting victim advocacy and will collect shoes from county employees to be donated to the Salvation Army. Lastly, the Cherokee Circuit will be having a quilt made depicting various National Crime Victims' Rights Week themes. The quilt will be displayed at various public places throughout the year to bring awareness to victims' rights.

Coweta Judicial Circuit
For National Crime Victims' Rights Week this year, a series of newspaper articles in all five counties will run entitled “Today’s Victim.” The articles will chronicle the stories of seven crime victims and their journeys through the criminal justice system and with our Victim-Witness Assistance Program. Banners will be displayed in all courtrooms with this year’s theme – “Every Victim…Every Time.” Orange and blue rubber bracelets will be distributed to middle school students that read “If you’re a victim, we’re here for you.” Orange and blue ribbons will be distributed to law enforcement and other criminal justice agencies that read “Every Victim…Every Time.” Public service announcements will air on local radio stations.

Flint Judicial Circuit: Henry County
Bows are being placed around the Courthouse Square to honor all crime victims and in recognition of National Crime Victims’ Rights week. For more information contact Victim Services Program at 770-288-6351.

Prevent Child Abuse armbands will be sold with a business card having important phone numbers about reporting child abuse

Public service announcements will air on local radio stations all month regarding child abuse prevention and crime victims’ rights

Bookmarks with important phone numbers will be strategically placed around the courthouse

President of the District Attorneys Association will throw out the first pitch at the opening Rome Braves game
