Assistant District Attorney

The District Attorney’s Office in the Alapaha Judicial Circuit has an opening for a VAWA (Violence Against Women Act) Assistant District Attorney. The following duties are normal for this position; other duties may be required and assigned:

With regard for Alapaha Judicial Circuit cases involving violence against women, the VAWA Assistant District Attorney will:

Prepare for and handle assigned pre-trial hearings and motions;  Prepare accusations and indictments or dismissals, as appropriate, for assigned cases;  Present evidence to Grand Jury on indictments;  Prepare Grand Jury presentments and attend Grand Jury in the absence of the District Attorney; Conduct effective, timely prosecution of assigned cases;  Review evidence in cases and obtain additional investigation necessary to insure effective prosecution;  Prepare plea recommendations on all assigned cases; meet with and discuss assigned cases with defense counsel;  Attend and conduct arraignments and trial calendar calls and effectively communicate with trial judges regarding relevant facts and appropriate recommendations;  Evaluate which cases need to be tried and be prepared to try such cases; determine availability of witnesses prior to trial;  Meet and discuss with potential witnesses their testimony to insure the State puts forward its best possible case to the jury or court;  Evaluate and determine prior to trial the exhibits necessary for effective prosecution and have them ready for court;  Try the cases that need to be tried;  Mark file folders and update Tracker case management system as appropriate with case specific information after each court appearance;  Represent the State at probation revocation hearings;  Comply with discovery requirements to insure necessary evidence is admitted at trial;  Handle post-trial motions, habeas corpus hearings, and appeals;  Keep abreast of pertinent appellate court decisions, statutes, policies, regulations, and other legal matters pertaining to criminal prosecutions;  Represent the State in all assigned matters in the Superior and Juvenile Courts;  Attend specialized training for prosecution of violent crimes against women;  Coordinate with the VAWA Investigator in providing training for local law enforcement regarding violent crimes against women and Collaborate with Victim Assistants to enhance community awareness of the impact of VAWA-defined crimes. .

Minimum qualifications: All applicants must be a member in good standing with the State Bar of Georgia or be in good standing of another state’s bar association that is eligible for reciprocity admittance to the State Bar of Georgia; and be admitted to practice before the Georgia Supreme Court and Court of Appeals. All candidates are subject to a background check. Applicants selected for hire will be subject to fingerprinting, a criminal history background check, a motor vehicle driver’s history check and pre-employment drug screening; employment is contingent upon the completion and satisfactory results of each investigation.
