Assistant Solicitor-General

The Office of the Solicitor General, Columbus, Muscogee County, Georgia has an opening for an Assistant Solicitor General.  This position is responsible for prosecuting misdemeanor criminal cases occurring in Columbus, Muscogee County, Georgia, in the State Court.  We are looking for an entry level or experienced attorney who is a team player and desires to become an excellent prosecutor.  

 

MAJOR DUTIES (include but are not limited to):  Assists the Solicitor General in the administration and work of the office; Reviews law enforcement reports, criminal histories, driving histories, videos, warrants and affidavits, crime lab reports, and other relevant information and evidence as necessary to prepare and prosecute cases; Ensures cases are properly investigated for prosecution; Prepares accusations and cases for arraignment, hearings, and trial; Negotiates cases with pro se defendants, private attorneys, and the Public Defender’s office; Handles and prosecutes bond revocation hearings, probation revocation hearings, and pretrial and post-trial motions and hearings as necessary; Prepares written reports, discovery responses, pretrial and post-trial motions, briefs, orders, letters, subpoenas, and other documents; Represents the State in Mental Health Court; Coordinates with mental health personnel regarding appropriate handling and disposition of cases in Mental Health Court; Researches and writes appeals for the State of Georgia; Reads, analyzes, and interprets Georgia statutes and regulations as well as Georgia and federal case law; Researches legal issues; and Performs other related duties as assigned.  

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:  All applicants must be a member in good standing with the State Bar of Georgia.  (Applicants with pending results of the Georgia Bar Examination will be considered).  A criminal background check is completed on all candidates.  Employment is contingent upon the completion and satisfactory results of the background investigation, bar examination, and drug tests.  Salary is commensurate with experience based on the Consolidated Government of Columbus Pay Scale.
