Part-Time SAKI Investigator
The DeKalb County District Attorney’s Office (DKDA) is currently accepting resumes for a part-time Investigator to work in its Sexual Assault Kit Initiative Unit (SAKI). The SAKI Unit is responsible for reviewing and cataloging sexual assaults and sexually motivated homicide cases that have been deemed “cold” by various law enforcement agencies within DeKalb County. These are unsolved criminal investigations that need further review to determine the solvability of each case. This position will investigate cases that meet the criteria set forth in the SAKI grant.
The following duties are normal for this position; other duties may be required and assigned:
Reviews and obtains all SAKI cases and inputs each case into a designated case management system. Reviews each case to determine which cases meet the criteria to investigate further within the guidelines of the grant. Based upon the review, seeks to determine what physical evidence exists and evaluates the utility of the evidence and any previous testing that was conducted. Interviews victims, witnesses, law enforcement, and potential offenders. Follows a specific course of action in seeking a DNA profile, including obtaining potential new DNA samples and/or retesting previously obtained evidence. Prioritizes cases in which a DNA profile has been generated. Contacts and updates victims to the status of the case. Works with internal and external resources such as the Georgia Bureau of Investigation (GBI), other approved forensic labs, former detectives that initially worked the cases, other Cold Case Units in the Metro Atlanta area as well as throughout the state and nation, and the FBI and police databases that house the original reports from the respective agency. Serves as a representative of the office on related task forces.
Also, must be able to conduct general investigative tasks such as obtaining police reports, crime scene reports, crime lab reports, complaints, petitions, citations, photos, audio recordings, video recordings, written statements, phone records, digital (cellphone, tablet, computer) extraction records, medical records, social media analysis, jail call analysis and other evidence of crimes committed; reviews those items for probable cause, for witnesses needed for court, and for potential problems in proving the case; compiles an investigative report that summarizes the case facts; travels to crime scenes, ensures that required analysis of evidence has been completed; reviews current law for changes that may have a bearing on case presentation; obtains and executes search warrants; coordinates with the assigned Assistant District Attorney (ADA) in the unit to review case files and determine what investigation is needed.
This position would require 20 hours of work per week.
Preferred Qualifications: Associate’s Degree in Criminal Justice or a related field required; ten (10) years of experience in criminal justice or criminal investigation; significant training and experience in the investigation of major crimes, more specifically, sexual assault cases and homicides, experience investigating cases involving DNA and forensic evidence, experience entering and retreiving data from various databases, or any equivalent combination of education, training, and experience which provides the requisite knowledge, skills, and abilities for this job.
Knowledge/ Skills/Abilities: The ideal candidate must possess and maintain a valid Georgia driver’s license; must possess and maintain Georgia Peace Officer Standards and Training Council (POST) certification; possesses investigative experience specifically involving violent crimes, including homicide. Must be able to multitask and work under occasionally stressful time constraints.
