Investigator - Homicide and Gangs Unit

The DeKalb County District Attorney’s Office (DKDA) is currently accepting resumes for an Investigator to work in its Homicide and Gangs Unit. The Homicide and Gangs Unit is responsible for investigating and prosecuting homicides, complex gang cases and complex armed robbery cases in the Stone Mountain Judicial Circuit.

The following duties are normal for this position; other duties may be required and assigned: Conducts thorough and impartial investigations to gather evidence used in the apprehension, indictment, prosecution and conviction of law violators at the pre-indictment and prosecutorial level in the District Attorney’s Office. Investigates crimes; obtains police reports, crime scene reports, crime lab reports, complaints, petitions, citations, photos, audio recordings, video recordings, written statements, phone records, digital (cellphone, tablet, computer) extraction records, medical records, social media analysis, jail call analysis and other evidence of crimes committed; reviews those items for probable cause, for witnesses needed for court, and for potential problems in proving the case; compiles an investigative report that summarizes the case facts; travels to crime scenes, ensures that required analysis of evidence has been completed; reviews current law for changes that may have a bearing on case presentation; obtains and executes search warrants; coordinates with Assistant District Attorneys (ADAs); meets with ADAs to review case files and determine what investigation is needed; assist ADAs with witness and victim interviews, some of which take place in the field; interviews police officers or detectives regarding their role in the investigation; assists ADAs in preparation of /and during trial.

Preferred Qualifications: Minimum Qualifications/Requirements: Associate’s Degree in Criminal Justice or a related field required; five (5) years of experience in criminal justice or criminal investigation; or any equivalent combination of education, training, and experience which provides the requisite knowledge, skills, and abilities for this job.

Knowledge/ Skills/Abilities: The ideal candidate must possess and maintain a valid Georgia driver’s license; must possess and maintain Georgia Peace Officer Standards and Training Council (POST) certification; possesses a minimum of five (5) years of investigative experience. Must be able to multitask and work under occasionally stressful time constraints.

Employment is contingent upon the completion and satisfactory results of a criminal background check and physical/drug screen.

Salary Range: Salary and benefits will be commensurate with experience.
