Assistant District Attorney

The District Attorney’s Office in the Waycross Judicial Circuit has openings for an Assistant District Attorney.

The following duties are normal for this position:
• Reviews reports submitted by law enforcement to determine whether further investigation is needed; approves or returns cases for more work; researches alternative crimes; reads and researches case law;
• Drafts accusations and indictments; evaluates and researches potential defenses; negotiates pleas to dispose of cases; dismisses cases not prosecutable;
• Develops trial strategy for each case, presents cases to grand jury; questions witnesses; answers juror’s questions; determines appropriate sentence recommendations; calls arraignment calendars; attends pretrial conferences with judge and defense attorneys;
• Subpoenas appropriate witnesses for motions; researches and argues all pretrial and post-trial motions; files motions in appropriate time frame prior to trial. Complies with discovery requirements by copying and mailing documents;
• Prepares for jury trials in Superior Court and represents the State of Georgia at trial in the prosecution of felony crimes;
• Continue prosecution through the appellate phases in the Georgia Court of Appeals or Georgia Supreme Court, as assigned;
• May be required to prosecute matters in Juvenile Court and/or an Accountability Court, such as Drug Court or Mental Health Court;
• Attend periodic prosecutor-focused CLE training (such as training and conferences provided through the Prosecuting Attorneys Council of Georgia);
• And other duties may be required and assigned.

The ideal candidate enjoys working with others, but is also able to work independently, can manage deadlines and multitask, and enjoys a fast-pace office with lots of courtroom opportunities. Full-time assistant district attorneys are prohibited by Georgia law from the private practice of law.

The Waycross Judicial Circuit is comprised of six counties: Bacon, Brantley, Charlton, Coffee, Pierce, and Ware County, with offices in Coffee and Ware Counties. Office assignment will be discussed at the time an offer for employment is extended based upon residency and position availability.

Minimum qualifications: All applicants must be a member in good standing with the State Bar of Georgia or be in good standing of another state’s bar association that is eligible for reciprocity admittance to the State Bar of Georgia; and be admitted to practice before the Georgia Supreme Court and Court of Appeals. All candidates are subject to a background check. Applicants selected for hire will be subject to fingerprinting, a criminal history background check, a motor vehicle driver’s history check and pre-employment drug screening; employment is contingent upon the completion and satisfactory results of each investigation.

Preferred Qualifications:

• Former prosecuting experience
• Admitted to practice law before the Georgia Court of Appeals
• Admitted to practice law before the Georgia Supreme Court
• Resident of the State of Georgia
