Assistant District Attorney - Juvenile Unit
The DeKalb County District Attorney’s Office is currently accepting resumes for an Assistant District Attorney to work in its Juvenile Unit. The ideal applicant has a passion to work with our youth, crime victims and their families at the DeKalb County Juvenile Court. A Juvenile Court Assistant District Attorney will be responsible for prosecuting all Juvenile cases occurring in DeKalb County.
Some of the duties would include: reviewing reports submitted by law enforcement to determine whether further investigation is needed; researching alternative crimes; reading and researching case law; drafting juvenile petitions; evaluating and researching potential defenses; negotiating pleas to dispose of cases; making decisions on whether to prosecute or dismiss a case; develop and execute trial strategy for each case; question witnesses; determine appropriate sentence recommendations; call arraignment calendars; determine who to subpoena for trial and motions; research and argue all pretrial motions; file motions in the appropriate time frame prior to court; and comply with discovery demands.; trying cases; examining and preparing witnesses for trial; planning trial strategy and researching all points of law; drafting memoranda regarding complex legal issues; researching, writing, and arguing motions and court orders; training law enforcement personnel on issues, including obtaining necessary evidence to prosecute crimes; advising law enforcement personnel on various legal issues; negotiating with opposing counsel; reporting to the Deputy Chief Assistant District Attorney in charge of the Unit; and other duties as assigned.
Preferred Qualifications/Requirements
All applicants must be a member in good standing with the State Bar of Georgia. Have at least 2 years’ experience as a prosecutor and/or any training that includes litigation and criminal law; or any equivalent combination of education, training and experience which provides the requisite knowledge, skill and abilities for a Juvenile Court Assistant District Attorney; must be able to multitask and work under occasionally stressful time constraints.
Knowledge/Skills/Abilities
The successful candidate must possess excellent communication skills, both oral and written; must be detail-oriented; strong organizational and interpersonal skills are a must; must be able to work well in a team environment, while at the same time have the ability to work independently; must demonstrate a strong sense of personal responsibility and leadership skills, as well as a commitment to serving the community and working with the public; and should be passionate and committed to the youth of DeKalb County. Familiarity with the Official Code of Georgia Criminal Manual and the Juvenile Code is preferred.
