Investigator
The District Attorney’s Office is seeking a qualified Investigator to join the Evidence Unit. This position is responsible for supporting all aspects of the Office’s evidence and property functions, maintaining inventory and equipment, and assisting with onboarding processes for new investigative staff. The Investigator will report directly to the Supervising Investigator of the Evidence Unit and Deputy Director of Operations and Special Projects.
Key Responsibilities:
- Handle the receipt, processing, storage, and release or disposal of property and evidence in accordance with laws, policies, and best practices, including the safe handling of firearms, narcotics, bodily fluids, and other evidentiary items.
- Conduct routine inventories and audits of evidence, property, equipment, software, and other operational items.
- Maintain logs, databases, and records related to property and evidence, ensuring accuracy and compliance with internal procedures and legal requirements.
- Respond to evidence requests from law enforcement, investigators, attorneys, and other authorized parties.
- Appear in court to testify regarding the handling, processing, and chain of custody of evidence.
- Assist with the development and improvement of evidence-handling policies and procedures.
- Participate in onboarding activities for new investigative personnel, including equipment issuance and procedural orientation.
- Support budget planning and operational improvements by providing insight and recommendations based on field experience.
- Attend relevant training programs and stay up to date on regulations, procedures, and legal developments.
- Assist with internal deliveries and movement of items within the District Attorney’s Office.
- Collaborate with the Records Department and other internal teams to ensure efficient and compliant handling of evidence-related responsibilities.
This position involves physical work, including lifting and carrying heavy objects and climbing ladders. Attention to detail, organizational skills, and the ability to work effectively both independently and as part of a team are essential.
Preferred Qualifications: Minimum Qualifications/Requirements: three years of experience in criminal justice or criminal investigation; or any equivalent combination of education, training, and experience which provides the requisite knowledge, skills, and abilities for this job.
Knowledge/ Skills/Abilities: The ideal candidate must possess and maintain a valid Georgia driver’s license; must possess and maintain Georgia Peace Officer Standards and Training Council (POST) certification. Must be able to multitask and work under occasionally stressful time constraints. Must possess sufficient strength and stamina to lift and carry objects weighing up to 50 pounds and have the ability to climb ladders. Must be willing to work in confined areas and from heights and with exposure to unpleasant and potentially hazardous conditions. Must have proficiency in computer skills. Ability to learn and become proficient in various case management and evidence management software to include but not limited to Odyssey, NICE, and BEAST. Evidence control experience, including record keeping, is preferred.
