Assistant Solicitor General

The Douglas County Solicitor General’s Office has an opening for an Assistant Solicitor General .  The duties and responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • the investigation and preparation of cases for trial, representing the State in all stages of court proceedings from State Court to the Appellate Courts, and performing additional tasks relating to the function of the department as assigned by the Solicitor-General. This includes reviewing case file and analyzing the facts and evidence of the case; preparing accusations and arraignment: reviewing criminal histories of defendants; determining appropriateness of diversion, dismissal or charges; reviewing accuracy of jurisdiction, venue, and scope of arrest powers;
  • Conducts case research and documentation: research relevant case law and interprets in relation to the facts of the case;
  • Prepares briefs and motions and responses to same; writes case summaries; drafts accusations, discovery, and supporting documents;
  • Argues all pretrial and post-trial motions;
  • Develops trial strategy; organizes opening and closing statements;
  • Read appellate briefs and case transcripts, write responses to briefs;
  • Works with trial team investigators to coordinate evidence for trial;
  • Complies with discovery requirements;
  • Interviews law enforcement, witnesses, victims, experts and others regarding cases;
  • Negotiate pleas to dispose of cases. Determine appropriate bond amounts;
  • Supervises, directs, and evaluates assigned staff;
  • Manages caseload: attends scheduled court appearances, including plea and arraignment, status, case management, final plea, motions, and trial calendar.

The Assistant Solicitor-General must show an ability to communicate and work with the public, judges, office staff and court personnel.

Preferred Qualifications: A Juris Doctorate is required supplemented by one year(s) of experience in criminal justice, legal, or generally related field; or any equivalent combination of education, training, and experience which provides the requisite knowledge, skills, and abilities for this job. An Assistant Solicitor-General must be a member in good standing with the Georgia Bar. Candidate should be able to pass a criminal background check.
