Victim Witness Advocate

This is an administrative, coordination, and advocacy position to assist with the implementation of the Victim Assistance Program. The person filling this position performs legal support duties, coordination, and outreach relevant to victims. The position provides direct services to victims and witnesses of crime as required by the Georgia Law and the Victims Bill of Rights. The incumbent works under the general supervision of the District Attorney, the Director of Victim Services, and the Chief Investigator for the District Attorney.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Duties include but are not limited to:
• Interviewing victims and/or families of victims of crimes to determine needed assistance referrals to other agencies/resources
• Informing and explaining their rights as provided by Georgia law
• Serving as liaison between the District Attorney and Assistant District Attorney, and victims
• Providing with outreach to the growing Hispanic and minority communities
• Offering explanation of court process, acclimating victims and witnesses to court proceedings
• Escorting victims and witnesses to court
• Informing victims and witnesses of case statuses by phone and mail
• Assisting with parole board victim notification and inmate release
• Assisting victims in completing applications and statements
• Assisting eligible victims in the completion of Victim Compensation Applications
• Maintaining records, files, and statistics of each case, victim, and witnesses
• Performing general and routine advocacy for crime victims
• Maintaining knowledge of current trends and developments in the field
• Networking with local, state, and community service providers to serve as a resource and referral for victims
• All responsibilities may not be performed by all incumbents
• Performing other duties as assigned

QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS:

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE:
·Bachelor’s degree or higher from an accredited college or university with major field of study in a related discipline
·Two years of professional related work experience in prosecutor’s office in victims’ assistance or directly related criminal justice field·An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:
·Knowledge of personal computers and related software.
·Knowledge of legal terminology and court systems.
·Knowledge in Trauma-Informed victim services
·Knowledge of the Juvenile Court System·Cultural Competency
·Ability to plan, organize, and accomplish work within prescribed deadlines.
·Skill in counseling, empathizing, and communicating clearly with victims.
·Ability to be a victim’s advocate before the public.·Ability to read, analyze, and interpret a variety of documents such as technical reports, governmental policies and procedures, correspondence, budgets, tables, and professional articles, etc.
·Ability to collect data, information, and trends.·Ability to establish facts and to draw valid conclusions.
·Ability to write reports, policies, operating procedures, and correspondence.
·Ability to communicate effectively with employees and managers at all levels of the organization.
·Ability to deal with a variety of factors and situations and solve practical problems.
