Victim/Witness Advocate - Juvenile Division

The Henry County District Attorney’s Office (Flint Judicial Circuit; approximately 30 minutes south of Atlanta) has an opening for a Victim/Witness Advocate in our Juvenile Division. This position will work closely with victims and/or witnesses of juvenile crime to guide them through the Victim/Witness Advocacy Program.

Responsibilities include:
– Assist with compensation claims, victim impact statements and advising of available resources based on the Victim Bill of Rights. Knowledge of the judicial process with respect to victims’ rights and case filings. Experience working with prosecutors and law enforcement is preferred.

– Coordinate efforts to serve victims of crimes from the time of detention by working with law enforcement agencies, juvenile authorities, magistrate courts and custodial authorities to put in place and maintain victim notification procedures from the time of the offender’s detention.

– Enter data regarding victim services as required into the TRACKER data entry system with regards to victim services provided. Good written and oral communication skills, as well as computer and telephone skills, are necessary.

– Attend court hearings and notify victims of crimes of proceedings and outcomes when possible. Court-appropriate dress is required.

– Provide referral information and assistance to victims regarding the criminal justice system, victim’s compensation, restitution, counseling services, emergency shelter, and area support groups for victims.

– Provide information to law enforcement agencies and community service providers regarding the crime victims’ bill of rights, information concerning the criminal justice system, and area service providers including crime victims’ compensation for felony victims of crime.

Applicants should have:
– Knowledge and level of competency commonly associated or equal to an undergraduate degree in fields of study such as criminal justice, human services, paralegal studies or other related fields, and advanced secretarial/organizational skills.

– Experience sufficient to thoroughly understand the diverse objectives and functions of the program, and the workings of the criminal justice system.

– Ability to work with and provide victim services to individuals of all backgrounds and cultures, as well as the ability to work well with and at the direction of the District Attorney and the program director.

– Ability to work with various agency representatives to coordinate services.

Superior customer service skills, positive attitude, personal responsibility and a strong sense of responsibility to the community are preferred. All candidates are subject to a background check. Applicants selected for hire will be subject to fingerprinting, a criminal history background check, a motor vehicle driver’s history check and pre-employment drug screening. Employment is contingent upon the completion and satisfactory results of each investigation.
