Deputy Chief ADA - CAEPAD

The DeKalb County District Attorney’s Office (DKDA) is currently accepting resumes for a Deputy Chief Assistant District Attorney to oversee the Crimes Against Elder Persons and Adults with Disabilities Unit (CAEPAD). The CAEPAD Unit is responsible for investigating and trying cases where the adult victims are age 65 or older or have disabilities. Those crimes include not just neglect, exploitation, abuse and sexual abuse, but any crime where the perpetrator targets an at-risk adult in the Stone Mountain Judicial Circuit including financial crimes. Principal duties and responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

• Management and supervision of a specialized trial unit consisting of 1 Senior Assistant District Attorney, 1 investigator, 1 victim advocate and 1 paralegal.

• Maintaining a caseload comprised of one-half of the unit’s cases.

• Reviewing all unit case files and ensuring that all relevant evidence has been secured, properly documented, and organized for efficient disposition of the investigation or prosecution.

• Reviewing all unit indictments and, together with the Senior Assistant District Attorney in the unit, presenting all indictments to the Grand Jury.

• Sitting as first chair or second chair on all CAEPAD trials.

• Managing and running the DARA (DeKalb At-Risk Adult) MDT, which meets quarterly. The MDT consists of law enforcement agencies and social service agencies and organizations that service the at-risk adult population.

• Consult with partner agencies throughout the year regarding criminal legal issues that they encounter while servicing the at-risk adult population

• Creating and presenting educational presentations to inform senior citizens, law enforcement, prosecutors and other members of the legal community about the crimes being perpetrated against at-risk adults.

• Working with the Georgia Bureau of Investigation, Prosecuting Attorneys’ Council of Georgia and other agencies to identify gaps in Georgia’s laws protecting at-risk adults, and either propose amendments to said laws or create bills that would assist in the prosecution of crimes against at-risk adults.

• Being a direct resource for ADAs, Investigators, Victim Advocates and Trial Assistants regarding crimes against at-risk adults to include assistance with trial preparation, motions preparation, and indictment drafting.

• Advising and assisting law enforcement partners on various legal issues involving at-risk adult victims.

• Representing the District Attorney at meetings, conferences, and community events.

Preferred Qualifications: The ideal candidate must be a licensed member in good standing with the State Bar of Georgia; must possess substantial prosecutorial experience in Georgia, and extensive jury trial experience specifically related to crimes against at-risk adults; must be able to multitask and work under occasionally stressful time constraints; must have the ability to work independently; and must be able to work closely with local and federal law enforcement agencies.

Knowledge/Skills/Abilities: The successful candidate must possess excellent communication skills, both oral and written; must be detail-oriented; strong organizational and interpersonal skills are a must; must be able to work well in a team environment; must demonstrate a strong sense of personal responsibility and leadership skills, as well as a commitment to serving the community and working with the public. Prior experience working with at-risk adult cases is required.
