Assistant Solicitor II

The Dekalb County Solicitor-General’s Office is looking for Attorneys to join our team. The duties of the position include the following but are not limited to:

  • Conducts initial case evaluations as assigned.
  • Reviews case files and analyzes case facts and evidence.
  • Assesses client eligibility and needs, when applicable.
  • Reviews criminal histories.
  • Determines the appropriateness of diversion, dismissal, or charges.
  • Reviews jurisdiction, venue, and scope of arrest powers for accuracy.
  • Ensures sufficient probable cause exists.
  • Prepares or reviews charges and discovery materials.
  • Prepares for court hearings and arraignments.
  • Investigates, analyzes, and prepares assigned cases for hearings and trials.
  • Interviews clients in and out of custody, when applicable.
  • Requests and reviews records and evidence.
  • Prepares graphics and exhibits for court proceedings.
  • Makes investigative requests and follows up on leads.
  • Obtains and reviews scientific results and analyses.
  • Identifies and interviews witnesses and verifies alibis.
  • Observes crime scenes as necessary.
  • Subpoenas witnesses and prepares them for trial.
  • Prepares clients for trial, when applicable.
  • Determines the need for expert witnesses and assists with procuring and interviewing them.
  • Assesses the need for psychological or psychiatric evaluations of clients.
  • Anticipates potential legal issues and assists in developing case strategies.
  • Presents cases to supervisors for review.
  • Represents clients or the State of Georgia in court proceedings, including arraignments, preliminary and pre-trial hearings, motion hearings, jury and bench trials, probation and sentencing proceedings, and post-adjudication/post-conviction hearings.
  • Represents clients or the State in alternative and diversion programs, specialty courts, and related proceedings.
  • Prepares and argues motions and presents evidence.
  • Negotiates and presents plea resolutions.
  • Negotiates on behalf of clients at all stages of proceedings, when applicable.
  • Advises clients or victims regarding the acceptance or rejection of plea offers.
  • Assists with jury selection and opening and closing statements.
  • Presents evidence and questions witnesses during court proceedings.
  • Makes bond and sentencing recommendations as assigned.

Preferred Qualifications: Juris Doctorate Degree required; one year of experience in criminal justice, legal, or related field; or any equivalent combination of education, training, and experience which provides the requisite knowledge, skills, and abilities for this job.

Specific License or Certification Required: Must possess and maintain a valid Georgia driver’s license; and must possess and maintain licensure from the Georgia State Bar Association.

Salary Range: $90k-109K
