Assistant District Attorney
The District Attorney’s Office for the Western Judicial Circuit (serving Athens-Clarke and Oconee Counties) has an opening for an Assistant District Attorney. Depending on the experience, the position may be State Paid or County Paid with the salary based on experience as well.
Altogether, Athens-Clarke County (home of the University of Georgia) and Oconee County have a population of close to 165,000 persons, excluding students. The main office is located in Downtown Athens, within a few blocks of the University and about an hour or so from Atlanta. Overall, the office consists of thirty-nine (39) staff members, including eighteen (18) ADA’s.
In addition to the minimum qualifications set forth below, applicants should possess quality litigation experience, preferably prosecutorial litigation experience. Specifically, we’re looking for someone who can jump right in and run a courtroom and won’t be bashful about doing so, someone who works well with various agencies and individuals and someone who knows how to “flat-out” try a case, dotting all i’s and crossing all t’s, while maintaining ethical standards and integrity at all times.
Specifically, this office is looking for candidates who possess the following qualities: common sense; good people skills; initiative; integrity; a keen legal mind and skills; a strong sense of right and wrong, balancing justice with fairness; an ability to effectively multi-task, staying calm under pressure; and a sense of personal and community responsibility.
The following duties are normal for this position; other duties may be required and assigned:
• Reviews reports submitted by law enforcement to determine whether further investigation is needed; approves or returns cases for more work; researches alternative crimes; reads and researches case law.
• Drafts accusations and indictments; evaluates and researches potential defenses; negotiates pleas to dispose of cases; dismisses cases not prosecutable.
• Develops trial strategy for each case, presents cases to grand jury; questions witnesses; answers juror’s questions; determines appropriate sentence recommendations; calls arraignment calendars; attends pre-trial conferences with judge and defense attorneys.
• Subpoenas appropriate witnesses for motions; researches and argues all pretrial and post-trial motions; files motions in appropriate time frame prior to trial. Complies with discovery requirements by copying and mailing documents.
Minimum qualifications: All applicants must be a member in good standing with the State Bar of Georgia or be in good standing of another state’s bar association that is eligible for reciprocity admittance to the State Bar of Georgia; and be admitted to practice before the Georgia Supreme Court and Court of Appeals. All candidates are subject to a background check. Applicants selected for hire will be subject to fingerprinting, a criminal history background check, a motor vehicle driver’s history check and pre-employment drug screening; employment is contingent upon the completion and satisfactory results of each investigation.
